Social Media News: Instagram Now Lets Users Upload Different Photo Sizes
Instagram made a change to its photo size restrictions, now allowing users to post pictures with an aspect ratio between 1.91:1 and 4:5. To change the way the photo appears, tap the arrows icon at the bottom left corner of the photo. This is the “format icon,” which allows users to switch their photos between square, portrait or landscape.
Businesses and personal users no longer have to be concerned with portions of the picture being cropped out, a common outcome of the square-photo requirements. Also, Instagram photos will now be aligned with photos used for other platforms, such as Pinterest or Facebook.
Social Media Tip of the Month:Tracking Competition on Facebook
Monitoring your company’s competition on social media is a good idea, but it can be time consuming to go through all the different pages. Luckily, Facebook has an easy way to do this:
At the top of your Facebook page, click “Insights”
Scroll down and select “Pages to Watch”
Search the pages you would like to monitor
After choosing at least five pages to monitor, click “Done”
Social Media Platform of the Month: Nextdoor
Nextdoor is a private, hyper-local social networking platform. The app lets neighborhoods and community members stay connected and build better relationships with one another. The company states that its mission is “to use the power of technology to build stronger and safer neighborhoods.”
Businesses may not create an account, per se, but they can join Nextdoor as a community member. However, like any social media platform, Nextdoor shouldn't be used to blatantly advertise products and services.
In fact, the best way for businesses to market using Nextdoor is word-of-mouth (referral) marketing. The platform acts as a message board in which community members can ask others for recommendations on things such as a trustworthy contractor or a good dry cleaner. Businesses should encourage their customers to leave good reviews on Nextdoor as they would with sites like Yelp and Angie's List.
